Dear Congressman Taylor:
Thank you for
responding to my email on healthcare reform.
I do not
agree with your arguments about cost or availability. The costs that you
refer to are the exorbitant and out of control costs that are being
generated by the monopolistic healthcare industry NOW, before any
meaningful reform. Adding the Medicare like "Public Option" will
introduce real competition into the healthcare industry. After reform
takes place the CEO of CIGNA may not be able to make $26 million. After
meaningful reform, which includes the "Public Option", is completed the
healthcare industry will have to provide healthcare to their customers to
stay in business. They make obscene profits now by simply denying
healthcare to people and insuring only healthy people who will not cost
them anything and Congress has not forced their hand.
Meaningful
healthcare reform will make the system much more efficient. Medicare has
a 3% overhead compared to the 20% and higher for the healthcare industry
and the 15% to 17% overhead for Medicare Advantage Plans that are supposed
to compete with Medicare
A recent poll
says that 72% of Americans want a Medicare like Public Option. They are
willing to pay the price to have a healthcare system that enables them to
see a doctor when they are ill. Government officials in countries with
universal healthcare systems are able to manage them successfully. The
populations in those countries would be very upset if the governments
attempted to end those systems.
It is time to
quit pretending that our healthcare system works just to accommodate the
healthcare industry. It is time to provide a streamlined system that
makes sense and provides every American the opportunity to access quality
healthcare. Thousands of Fourth Congressional District Mississippians are
counting on you to help provide them with that opportunity.
