The Benefits of Health Care Reform In the 4th Congressional District of
Mississippi
The U.S. Congress has passed, and President Obama has
signed, health care reform legislation. This legislation will make health
care affordable for the middle class, provide security for seniors, and
guarantee access to health insurance for the uninsured – while reducing
the federal deficit by $100 billion over the next decade.
In Rep. Gene Taylor’s district, the
health care reform bill will:
-
Improve coverage for 396,000
residents with health insurance.
-
Give tax credits and other assistance to up
to 197,000 families and 12,900 small businesses to help
them afford coverage.
-
Improve Medicare for 119,000
beneficiaries
-
Extend coverage to 97,000 uninsured
residents.
-
17,600 residents with pre-existing
conditions can obtain coverage.
-
Protect 800 families from bankruptcy
due to health care costs.
-
61,000 young adults can obtain
coverage on their parents’ plans.
-
Provide millions in new funding for 72
community health centers.
-
Reduce the cost of uncompensated care for
hospitals and other health care providers by $59 million
annually.

Mississippi corporate welfare costs
millions and with no taxpayer safeguards the true cost of this welfare
remains hidden while the benefits are exaggerated.
Harrison County assembled a subsidy package
put at $2.3 million for a Wal-Mart Supercenter in D'Iberville that opened
in 1999. $363.5 million subsidy package for the Canton Nissan plant, $330
million for Toyota in Blue Springs. $71 million for the failed Mississippi
Beef Processors plant in Oakland, MS.
Oreck Manufacturing left south Mississippi
as the plant’s 10-year property tax exemption ran out. State and local
subsides totaled more than $20.3 million for the Oreck plant. Even
Mississippi jails are being operated by private companies under tax-exempt
status.
For all this free money to corporations
over the last 20 years MS
is still 49th in economic development despite spending far more per capita
on economic subsidies than other states. We're not getting the results we
should for tax dollars spent. Below is the full report
prepared for the American Federation of Teachers on this tragic waste of
resources.
